General Eligibility Requirements Across Most Pilot Scholarships

Most scholarship programmes for pilot training in India follow a similar set of eligibility criteria. We must make sure we meet them before applying.

• Nationality: Indian citizen. Some schemes for commercial pilot license (CPL) training also accept OCI (Overseas Citizen of India) card holders.
• Age: Minimum 17-18 years for initial training; 18 years for CPL training.
• Academic Qualification: 10+2 or equivalent with physics and mathematics as compulsory subjects.
• English: English must be a subject in 10+2. Mandatory for clearing DGCA exams and airline selection.
• DGCA Pilot Medical Test: A valid Class II Medical Certificate is required at the application stage. Class I is required before the actual CPL.
• Institution: Must be enrolled in or applying to a DGCA-approved Flying Training Organisation (FTO).
• Category Certificate: SC/ST/OBC/EWS certificate required for all government category-based schemes.

Section 1: Central Government Scholarships for Pilot Training in India

The Government of India funds pilot training scholarships through two ministries: the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment (for OBC and SC students) and the Ministry of Tribal Affairs (for ST students). These are the most financially significant government scholarships available for CPL training.

Post-Matric Scholarship for OBC Students – CPL Provision (Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment)

This is the most directly useful central government scholarship for pilot training in India. It is confirmed on the official Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment website, which explicitly lists the Commercial Pilot License (CPL) as an eligible course.

How to Apply for the OBC CPL Scholarship

1.  Visit scholarships.gov.in and register with your Aadhaar-linked mobile number.
2. Select your state’s OBC Post-Matric Scholarship scheme from the available list.
3. Upload all required documents: OBC certificate, income certificate, DGCA admission letter, Aadhaar, and bank details.
4. Submit before the deadline and note your application reference number.

Top Class Education Scheme for SC Students (NSP) (Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment)

This scholarship supports Scheduled Caste (SC) students pursuing professional courses at recognised institutions, including DGCA-recognised flying institutes offering CPL and type rating training. The benefit package for aviation students is significantly generous.

IGRUA SC/ST Scholarship

Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Uran Akademi (IGRUA) is India’s premier government flying school, located in Fursatganj, Uttar Pradesh. It has two scholarship instruments available for eligible pilot students.

Section 2: State Government Scholarships for Pilot Training

State governments are increasingly active in funding aviation training for their residents. These schemes vary widely. Some are fully funded, some are per-hour subsidies, and some are concessional loans. Know your state’s scheme before you pick your flying school.

Mahajyoti – Maharashtra OBC/VJNT/SBC (20 Fully Funded CPL Seats)

This is one of the most generous state scholarships for pilot training in India and one of the most under-publicized. The Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Research and Training Institute (Mahajyoti) funds 20 complete CPL training placements at the Nagpur Flying Club for Maharashtra’s OBC, Vimukta Jati & Nomadic Tribes (VJNT), and Special Backward Category (SBC) candidates. The entire training fee is covered.

• Eligible candidates receive a monthly stipend of ₹5,000 throughout their training period.

Rajiv Gandhi Aviation Academy – Maharashtra (Up to 100% Subsidy)

The Maharashtra State Government offers a separate, broader aviation scholarship through the Rajiv Gandhi Aviation Academy. Unlike the Mahajyoti scheme (which is category-specific), this scholarship targets economically weaker sections from Maharashtra more generally and offers a more comprehensive support package.

Gujarat Government – CPL Concessional Loan

The Gujarat government offers a concessional loan specifically for commercial pilot license training. This is a loan and not a scholarship, but at 4% simple interest per annum. It is significantly cheaper than any bank education loan, which typically charges between 9% and 12%. It is available under two category tracks.

Loan Key Terms

• Repayment begins one year after the loan is disbursed.
• The monthly repayment installment is ₹5,000.
• The full loan must be repaid within 10 years, with a maximum of 12 years including interest.
• A penal interest of 2.5% is charged in case of default.
• If the trainee settles abroad after completing training, the entire loan amount must be returned to the government of Gujarat.
• The training institution, whether in India or abroad, must be duly approved. For overseas training, the CPL must be recognised by the DGCA.
• The applicant must be a Gujarat native or a domicile and belong to the SC or SEBC category.

Vision Flying Training Institute (VFTI) is located in Amreli, Gujarat.Gujarat SC and SEBC domicile candidates can train at VFTI and apply for the Gujarat state concessional loan at the same time. Since VFTI is located in Amreli, Gujarat, it meets the institutional approval requirement, and candidates do not need to relocate for training.

J&K Tribal Affairs Department – ‘Wings to Fly’ Scholarship

The J&K Tribal Affairs Department runs a dedicated pilot training scholarship for Scheduled Tribe students from Jammu & Kashmir. Called Wings to Fly, this scheme is jointly funded by the Ministry of Tribal Affairs and the central government, with applications processed through the National Scholarship Portal. Madhya Pradesh Civil Aviation Department – Contributory Scheme

The Government of Madhya Pradesh provides monetary aid for pilot training through its Civil Aviation Department. This is a contributory scheme, which means the government contributes a portion of the training cost for eligible candidates at approved flying organisations in the state.

Candidates must hold a Madhya Pradesh domicile certificate and meet the required DGCA pilot medical test and academic qualifications to be eligible for this scheme. Applications are submitted through the Madhya Pradesh Civil Aviation Department portal.

Tamil Nadu – Pudhumai Penn Scheme

The Pudhumai Penn scheme, which translates to “New Woman,” was launched by the Government of Tamil Nadu in 2022. It provides monthly financial support to female students from Tamil Nadu government schools who are pursuing higher professional education or aspiring to become a commercial female pilot.

Female students who have studied from Class V to Class XII in Tamil Nadu state government schools are eligible for this scheme. They receive a monthly stipend of ₹1,000 until they complete their diploma or graduation. Approximately 6 lakh girls benefit from this scheme every year. Applications can be submitted at tnscholarships.gov.in.

Section 3: Airline-Sponsored Cadet Pilot Programmes in India

Airline cadet programmes are the most structured path from zero experience to a job as a commercial pilot. They are not traditional scholarships. Most are loan-facilitated pathways, but they offer a guaranteed airline job at the end. 

SpiceJet is the exception. They offer a genuine scholarship component where a portion of the pilot training cost is covered and does not need to be repaid. 

Understanding the difference between these programmes is critical before you commit to one.

SpiceJet Cadet Pilot Program – Scholarship Component

SpiceJet’s Cadet Pilot Program at Spice Star Academy is the only Indian airline cadet program with a clearly documented scholarship component. This is an amount you do not repay. The scholarship is awarded to top academic performers at the time of enrollment.

IndiGo Cadet Pilot Program (via Marigold Aviation / CAE)

IndiGo is India’s largest airline by passenger share. It offers a cadet program in partnership with Marigold Aviation and training partners, including Canadian Aviation Electronics (CAE). This is a loan-facilitated program and not a scholarship. IndiGo facilitates bank loans that cover over 90% of the training cost. Candidates who successfully complete the program graduate as junior first officers on the Airbus A320.

Air India FlyHigh Cadet Pilot Program

Air India’s Cadet Pilot Program is the most prestigious airline pathway for aspiring Indian commercial pilots. Being part of India’s national carrier, joining Air India as a cadet means the possibility of flying internationally from early in your career. The program is structured as a loan-facilitated pathway with a guaranteed job at the end. It is important to note that it is not a scholarship.

The Tata Trusts offer a specific Civil Aviation Grant for candidates pursuing the Commercial Pilot License or seeking to complete a Type Rating after their CPL. 

This is one of the few scholarships in India that explicitly covers the Type Rating phase, which is the final step before joining an airline.

The JRD Tata Memorial Scholarship draws its name and inspiration from Jehangir Ratanji Dadabhoy Tata, widely regarded as the father of Indian civil aviation. This scholarship is awarded to IGRUA students on a merit-cum-means basis. It is separate from the Tata Trusts Civil Aviation Grant.

The Pilot CET is a national-level entrance examination that awards scholarships for DGCA ground school training based on All-India Rank. It is important to note that this scholarship covers ground school only and does not apply to flying hours. However, clearing your DGCA papers at near-zero cost frees up your financial resources for the more expensive flying phase of your training.
